On Variant Covers for Undisputed #2
We have 2 covers done and 1 in the works.
We now have two of our issue 2 cover variants done, and a third one in the works. Above is the main cover, drawn by Wedersom Arantes. Wedersom will be doing the main covers on all 3 books. He and I have them all worked out, and I feel like they will tell the story of Undisputed through just the covers. Issue 1 Hack was holding the belt up, looking at it with consternation. The belt coming back into his life and causing problems. Issue 2, the belt hangs on his back like a weight, holding him down. He’s reluctant to accept the responsibility of the belt in issue 2. And issue 3, he’ll have accepted his fate, and will be wearing it triumphantly (at least on the cover, we’ll see how it goes in the story…). This was the first piece completed for issue 2, and we’ve been sitting on it for a while, now.
This cover was done over the weekend by Tanner Ogle (of the Ogle Brothers). This is our Plastic City Comic Con exclusive cover. As I’ve mentioned, we plan on launching the Undisputed #2 Kickstarter campaign on August 23rd, at PCCC. So, this cover will only be available to people who back on day 1. Tanner, who’s responsible for the art on books like Lightkeepers (Lesser Known Comics), is a phenomenally talented Massachusetts-based artist. It’s my first time working with someone local. And we’re both going to be at PCCC, so it’ll be fun to be at a con with someone who I’ve worked on this book with. But this cover takes from a scene in the book. For wrestling fans, this scene takes place at the ECW Arena (which we just call “The Arena”). And Tanner really captured the neighborhood, and the fight. This cover we’re going to turn into a flyer and use to help promote the launch of the KS campaign.
We weren’t planning on having Francesco Iaquinta do a cover variant, originally. But he had some down time and cooked up two incredible Hack Halloway x Sabu pieces as a tribute for Sabu, who passed away recently. Sabu has been a big part of my wrestling fandom since the mid-90s when I was rushing home from high school to watch ECW on … I think it was channel 48. Hell, I forget. It was 30 years ago, don’t hold it against me. Anyway, after seeing both pieces that Francesco did, I think we’re going to have to use one of them for a cover variant. This one here, which is Hack Halloway hitting Sabu’s signature pose, this is going to be the C-cover for Undisputed #2.
The issue 2 Kickstarter campaign is going to launch on August 23rd, early in the morning (Eastern time). If you want to get a reminder email, then go to this link, and click “Notify me on launch”.
I may have a convention between now and Plastic City on 8/23. I’ll let you know if/when I book it.
